DeuXX is excited to bring to Montreal a collection of surrealist animated films by acclaimed American artist Suzan Pitt.
Since the 1970s, Pitt has created labor-intensive, weird and wonderful worlds through animating the subconscious. Her film Asparagus played before David Lynch’s Eraserhead during its two year run at midnight cinemas, and her work has been featured at many prestigious venues around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She has designed two operas in Germany, which were the first to include animated images for the stage (Damnation of Faust and The Magic Flute). She currently makes hand-painted coats for sublime fashion designer, Patricia Field (Sex and the City, The Devil Wears Prada).
Program includes:
ASPARAGUS (1979, 18 mins, no dialogue): Recently honored by The International Association of Film Animation (ASIFA) as one of the 50 best animated films of the past half century. A transcendent, feminist film filled with psychedelic sexual imagery, hand-drawn over 5 years.
JOY STREET (1995, 24 mins, no dialogue): A beautiful redemptive film of a woman’s journey from the depths of despair to hope, inspired by a cartoon mouse ashtray. With music by The Jazz Passengers and Debbie Harry.
EL DOCTOR (2006, 23 mins, original English version): Follows an intoxicated doctor on a darkly funny ride celebrating altered perception that swirls through visions of both the miraculous and the obscene. Features animation by Maria Vasilkovsky and Gerard Goulet (The Triplets of Belleville), with historic Mexican music recordings from the Arhoolie collection.
